Ship Arrivals at the Port of Quebec, 1822

The following arrivals were extracted from the Montreal Gazette 1822. In 1822 the Montreal Gazette was a bi-weekly publication.
note: if ships' rigging or name of Master unpublished, it is indicated by -- (The newspapers were filmed within their binding, making one side of some entries, unreadable, or only partly legible. This can lead to errors in the interpretation of the entry or missed entries. ) Be aware that there may be two or more ships of the same name, from the same, or different ports, during the same year. A few ships also made two trips in 1822.

DREADFUL SHIPWRECK OF THE ALBION PACKET

To Messrs. Cropper, Benson & Co.:
On my arrival in this place, early this morning, I was informed of the melancholy fate of the ship Albion, Captain Williams, one of the line of Packet Ships, from New York to your port—she was cast away before day light this morning, to the westward of the Old Head, near a place called Garrest-town, and I grieve to say, poor Captain Williams is no more. There were 22 passengers on board, in the cabin, 15 men and 7 women, all of whom have met a watery grave, with the exception of one young man from Boston, I understand—and he is so exhausted, he could not give the names of the others, or any particulars—seven of the crew are saved, one of the mates and six men. I am informed that there was a considerable sum in specie on board—part of the deck only floated ashore. Last night was very tempestuous—and, it seems, the ship lost her masts about ten o'clock, carrying a press of sail, off the land, wind S. South East, which was the cause of the misfortune ; and it was about three o'clock this morning that she struck on a ledge of rocks and went to pieces—I understand a few bales of cotton came ashore. It is my intention to go to the spot, and render any services in my power to the unfortunate survivors—and if anything particular comes to my knowledge, relative to this truly awful and melancholy catastrophe, I shall drop you a line.
In haste, your sincere friend,

JACOB MARK

  Quebec, 30th May
Halifax papers to the 1st May and St. John, N.B. to the 9th May, were received to-day ; the former contain advices from St. John's Newfoundland, to 13th April, and we are sorry to add that there is no intelligence of any of the vessels missing from this port since last fall, two of which it was supposed might have wintered or been wrecked on the west coast of Newfoundland without being heard of ; they are the Young Norval, the Earl of Dalhousie, the Union ; the two former are owned by merchants in this city. Their loss is rendered the more melancholy, as several of the passengers were of this City.
Curiosity — On Monday last one hundred and eighty two sturgeons were caught in one tide at the fishery of Mr. Dechene, Ste. Anne de la Pocatiere ; twenty six had been taken the day before. The smallest weighed upwards of 50 pounds, and a person in the parish bought one for the sum of six shillings and six pence which, weighed 213lbs French weight.
The Ship Charlet, of Guernsey, from Lisbon for Montreal, was spoken in long. 46, on April 24, with loss of bowsprit and foretopmast.
