The Fleets

Bailey & Leetham, Hull

A partnership was formed in 1854 between William Bailey and William Leetham to operate cargo and passenger services from Hull to Baltic ports. In 1864 services were expanded to Lisbon, Capetown and Portuguese African colonies. A Portuguese subsidiary company (Empreza Luzitana) was formed to operate this service and the ships were registered as owned by Bailey & Co, Lisbon. A brief service from Lisbon to the Azores operated until 1871. In 1881 the African contract was terminated by the Portuguese Government and the ships on this route reverted to the Hull - Baltic service. By 1871 ships were operating from London and Newcastle as well as Hull and the Hull - Lisbon route was extended to cover Mediterranean and occasional voyages to India after the opening of the Suez Canal. In 1881, Gee & Co, Hull were taken over by Bailey & Leetham together with their fleet of six ships. Intense competition in the Baltic, Scandinavian and North Sea trades took place in the early years of the 20th century, most competion coming from DFDS, Copenhagen and Thos. Wilson , Sons & Co, Hull and in 1903 Bailey & Wilson Ltd was taken over by Thos. Wilson & Sons and 23 ships were transferred to Wilson Line.
