The Fleets

Bland Line, GibraltarPoster

The company entered shipowning in 1861 initially to operate between Gibraltar and Tangier. In 1864 a passenger ship was built to run between Gibraltar and Moroccan ports and trade later expanded to the North African coast, Spain and the U.K.
In 1921 the first cargo crossing was made between Huelva and Norfolk, Va. and Baltimore but by 1930, due to the trade depression, routes were confined to Morocco, Spain and Portugal. The Spanish Civil War caused a large drop in trade and in a further blow in 1969 the Spanish Government closed the Spain - Gibraltar border which seriously affected the ferry service to Tangier. The border remained closed until 1985 and in 1986 Bland Line withdrew from shipowning.
