The Fleets
Fred Olsen Line
Founded in 1886 when Fredrik Olsen took over two of his
father's sailing ships to operate cargo / passenger services on the North
Sea. In 1896 the first steamship was ordered and in 1899 the company
moved from Hvidsten on Oslofjord to Christiania (Oslo). The Ganger Rolf
Shipping Line, Christiania was taken over in 1900 together with their
two ships and route to Rouen. In 1906 the Ostlandske Lloyd (East Norway
Lloyd) was acquired with their three ships and this gave Olsen access
to the Norway - Antwerp and Newcastle routes. Regular sailings to the
River Plate commenced in 1911, but these ceased in 1914. However, Fredrik
Olsen was allowed to join the Norwegian South American Line partnership
the same year, so continued South America sailings until 1980 when the
service finally finished. The Norden Shipping Co was purchased in 1912
with their six steamers and Norway - Holland services. Fredrik's son
Petter Olsen operated a seperate company to Baltic ports, and on his
death in 1913, his father also took control of this company. The opening
of the Panama Canal allowed services to the West Coast of America to
commence in 1915. After interruptions to continental trade during the
Great War, the business was rebuilt. In 1921 Thoresen Line was taken
over with their 15 ships and services to the Mediterranean and Canary
Islands and in 1923 Jelo Line with it's six ships and services to Germany
was taken over. In 1929 Olsen entered the tanker trade through a British
flagged subsidiary Blandford Shipping Co. and by 1933 Olsen owned 60
ships. In World War II, the majority of Olsen's ships escaped to England,
but the company lost 29 ships during the war. Services resumed in 1946.
In 1951 Olsen bought the Nordenfjeldske service between London, Antwerp
and Mediterranean ports and this was operated as Nor-Med Lines, London.
From 1975 the Newcastle service operated under the name Fred Olsen /
Bergen Line. The company is still trading.
