The Ships List: Passenger Ship Arrivals Canadian
Ports 1865-1899. Published by TheShipsList - Research Inc., 4353
Highway #2, Wellington, Nova Scotia
B2T 1J4, Canada. 2002. CAN$49.95.
The database contains records of 6,900 immigrant ships that arrived
in Canadian ports between 1865 and 1899. Each reference gives the
microfilm reel number for the passenger. ship list; ship's name;
ports and dates of departure and arrival; shipping line; special
groups; and remarks. The CD commonly provides a history and picture
of the individual ships, although care needs to be taken as ships
were often modified over time changing the numbers of masts, funnels,
etc.
The Basic Search has eight options:
departure port; departure year; arrival port; arrival date; ship's
name; shipping line; special groups;
remarks. For departure port a map is displayed from which a country
is selected. A map of the country is then displayed showing ports
for which data exists within the database. For example, when the
port of Barrow is selected in England there is only one ship in this
time period the Montezuma which sails from Barrow to Quebec in 1871.
In the database the date format is year-month-day. In the ship description
section the date format is day-month-year.
The details of the ship with a picture
or the details from the database for a particular voyage may be printed.
Selecting "print" previews
the page as it will appear printed. Striking CTRL-P is required
to send the page to the printer but this does not appear to be mentioned
anywhere. Use of the database occupies the full screen, it is not
within its own sizeable window, therefore you cannot see other programs
at the same time.
The CD contains a movie of a period ship that requires Apple Quicktime
4.0. The database will operate on Windows 95 or later, or Mactintosh
System 8.1 or later.
The value of this database is that with just a piece of information
about an immigrant's arrival the options may be narrowed before looking
at actual shipping lists. |
