Ship Arrivals at the Ports of Montreal and Quebec, 1835
Quebec Mercury #87. Tuesday, July 28, 1835
We have been favoured with copies of the bills "For regulating the
carriage of passengers in merchant vessels to the British possessions
on the continent and islands of North America", and of the bills "to
amend and consolidate the laws relating to merchant seamen", and "for
forming and regulating a registry of the seamen".
The former has already been published, but some amendments in committee
are made, the principle of which are: that vessels shall not carry more
than 3 persons per 5 tons, and have 5½ feet height between decks, or
a temporary platform where there is no deck, and 3 inches between the
deck and lower tier of berths; 50 gallons pure water, and 70 lbs. weight
of bread stuffs for each passenger; ships not having compliment of passengers
may carry 8 cubical feet of freight for each passenger, between decks.
A surgeon to every vessel carrying 100 and more passengers, and sufficient
medicines if less; master to pay £20 for landing a passenger not at
the port of contract; two children under 13, and 3 under seven years
to count as a passenger; master to pay 1s per day to each passenger
for unavoidable detention beyond the day of sailing; master obliged
to feed and keep on board passengers 48 hours after anchoring in port;
wrong list to be considered as a misdemeanour, and master punishable
by fine, from £5 to £20; master to give bond to Custom for £1000 that
ship is seaworthy, and all rules and regulations by this act shall be
performed; no suit to be maintained if more than 12 calendar months
after arrival in America, or return home. The act not to apply to passenger
vessels not having more than one passenger to every 5 tons. The act
not to extend to Bermuda and West Indies.(this item courtesy of Gilbert
Bossé Navigating
the Lower Saint Lawrence in the 19th Century)
The following arrivals were extracted from the Montreal Gazette
1835. Please note that sometimes an issue is missing so this extract does
not contain all vessels to these ports.

The pilot of the Great Britain, we understand, reports
that the brigantine Speedwell, which sailed hence for Hull on the
14th November last, was found on the cast point of Anticosti,
surrounded by ice. Part of the cargo (flour and salmon) was landed,
and the wreck was carried off by ice on the 23 April. The vessel was
lost about ten leagues below Hamel's provision post. No tidings have
been obtained of the crew. The boat was found about two miles from
the vessel, which came ashore with all sail set. (Montreal Gazette,

The Douglas had to discharge part of
her potash and staves after her arrival from Montreal on Friday, having
sprung a leak on her way down, and when discovered had four feet water
in her hold. She is now discharging the remainder of her cargo, after
which she will be taken on Davy's slip for examination. It is feared
that part of the ashes are damaged.
The bark Cadmus, of Poole, is undergoing repairs
in Black's floating dock.
The Salus, of Newcastle, and Princess
Royal are receiving repairs on Davy's slip. (Montreal
Gazette, May 28, 1835)

Grand River Indians-Last week four
Chiefs from the Six Nation Indians Grand River, were conveyed by the
William IV, steamer to Kingston, and from thence
by the Sir James Kempt steamer to the Indian woods
near Belleville, and landed at the Mohawk Indian reserve. We understood
from the Chiefs, that they were deputed by their brethren on the Grand
River, to proceed to Tyandinago, to invite the Mohawk tribe to move
up to the Indian reserve near Brantford, which if agreed on by the
latter tribe, would enable them to sell the Tyandinago reserve, and
apply the proceeds to the cultivation of their lands on the Grand
River. We believe the names of the four Chiefs composing the deputation,
are Brant, Joseph, Martin, and Powlet. They were accompanied by the
widow of late Chief, Peter John Brant, and her two sons-the widow
is the sister of the late celebrated Captain John Brant. We believe
the Chiefs had an interview with His Excellency in Toronto, on the
subject of the proposed union of the tribes.-Port Hope Warder. |

In the James, Ovingson, from Leith-Mr.
Geo Bell; Mrs Morrison and five children; Dr. M'Lean, and Miss Wilson.
A sailor named Davis, on board the brig Southampton
fell from the top-gallant mast, a height of eighty feet, had his
thigh and right arm dreadfully mutilated and fractured, as also
his face, splinters of wood having been extracted from the upper
jaw. He was admitted into the Marine Hospital, and, notwithstanding
the serious injury, some hopes are entertained of his recovery.

Among the passengers sailed on the 10th instant,
from New York, in the packet ship St. James, for
London, we notice the names of John Henry Parnell, Esq. of Ireland
and Mrs Parnell, Capt. Veitch, Mrs. Veitch, son and servant, Capt.
Oldrey and servant, Mr Shirley, of Jamaica, Capt. Vidal, and Ogden
Hoffman, Esq. of New York.
In noticing the departure of this packet, we cannot forbear calling
the attention of the Canadian public to the fact, that she is the
third new vessel added to the London line in the course of the last
two months. The Toronto, Capt. Robert Griswold,
which left New York on the 10th of May, the Westminster,
Capt. H.L. Champlin, (sailed on the 1st instant,) and
the St. James, Capt. W.S. Sebor, whose day of departure is
already mentioned, are all ships of the first class, and surpassed
by few if by any in the other lines. The exertions of Messrs. Grinnell,
Minturn & Co. and Mr Griswold to increase the efficiency of
the London line, are deserving of every encouragement on the part
of those of our community who are in the habit of frequently crossing
the Atlantic.
George Gregory, Esq. of this city, Mrs Gregory and family, sailed
on the 8th instant from New York, by the packet ship
George Washington, for Liverpool. Mr Alexander
Dobbs, of Kingston, U.C. Mr R.B. Seymour, of Quebec, and Messrs.
Samuel Rhodes and R.P. Kerrigon, were passengers by the same vessel.

The Clutha, Thompson, from Glasgow
for Montreal, went ashore on the Long rock, Ballywater, on the 26th
April-crew saved.
Miramichi, June 2.-On the 26th May, the bark
Doncaster, Foster, of Newcastle, bound to this
port, struck a piece of ice, off Cape North, (Cape Breton,) and
immediately foundered. The crew was picked up by the Dorothy,
Paul, of South Shields, bound to Quebec, and the master, mate, and
seven of the crew, were on the same evening put on board the Ajax,
Story, for Miramichi.
The brig John & Mary, of London, was lost
in the ice between St. Paul's and Cape Breton. The crew were taken
off by the Asia, bound to Quebec, and two of them
put on board the bark Europe, arrived at Bathurst.
Capt. Ayres reports having seen upwards of one hundred vessels in
the ice about the same place.
The Petworth Committee have just despatched another troop of emigrants
on board the Burrell, which is the fifth ship they have sent.
The emigrants are principally from Sussex, and are bound for Toronto,
Upper Canada. The general abstract of the persons on board is as
follows:-one farmer, one blacksmith, one wheelwright, one watchmaker,
three bricklayers, one butcher, one gardener, and three shoemakers;
in all 93 males above 14 years of age, 51 under ditto; 52 females
above 14 years and 54 under, including six infants. Every possible
attention was bestowed in providing for the comfort of the party;
which, indeed, has been the case in every expedition fitted out
under the auspices of the Petworth Committee. (Montreal Gazette,
June 18, 1835).

The wreck of the Speedwell, of Quebec,
about 150 tons burthen, full of water, and her materials carried off,
was discovered on the 26th of May, off St. Margarets, two
miles from land. A trunk was hooked from her cabin, containing wearing
apparel, &c. and a journal of Captain Hall, who carried emigrants
to Canada last year. She was towed into shore as close as she would
float; but it is probable she drifted again, as there were no means
of fastening her.-Halifax paper.
The new ship Thompson, Captain Henry, 698 tons,
which sailed from St. John, N.B. May 2, ran on shore near St John,
N.F. on the 14th Crew (except cook) and passengers saved.
The ship drifted to sea.
