Return to German Emigrants to South Australia

barque Alfred, 362 tons, Captain T. Meyer, from Hamburg 7th May 1859, Cape of Good Hope 19th July, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 25th August 1859 ... departed Adelaide 14th September, arrived Melbourne 23rd September 1859

The South Australian Advertiser, Saturday 27 August 1859
THE ALFRED.-This Hamburg barque arrived yesterday, the 25th August, from the place whence she hails, under the command of Captain Meyer, the same gentleman who arrived at this port in the Auguste. The vessel he has now brought out has concluded her second voyage to Sonth Australia, having sailed hence about eighteen months since for London with wool. The voyage this time has been one of a smart character, she having sailed from Hamburg on May 7th, and entered Table Bay after being at sea 49 days. A detention of 16 days here transpired ; tripping anchor again on July 19th, and making the run to this port in 34 days, being 100 days from the time of departure from Hamburg. Amongst her passengers are a large number of Prussians, a great number being bound to Victoria.

The Argus, Saturday 24 September 1859
Friday September 23rd:— Alfred, Hamburg barque, 362 tons, J. Meyer, from Hamburg May 10, via Cape Town July 17, and Adelaide 14th instant. Passengers-cabin : Mr. and Mrs. Bovell and family, Miss Duncan, Mr. Black ; and 27 in the steerage. F. Holler and Co., agents.

An index from the State Library South Australia (SLSA) shows that 115 German migrants should have been on the Alfred for Port Adelaide, and 35 for Melbourne a total of 150 immigrants. I have been able to find the 115 + 30 as listed below — Regards Robert.

note.— There are very few surviving original lists of German passengers, so the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources, such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources, input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me using the link above. Regards Robert, Adelaide
