Return to German Emigrants to South Australia

barque Dockenhuden, 335 tons, Captain J.H.O. Meyer, from Hamburg 26th November 1852, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 10th May 1853

The South Australian Register, Friday May 20th 1853:—
Arrival: Thursday February 26th, the barque Dockenhuden, 335 tons, Meyer, from Hamburg the 26th November 1852 and Plymouth 20th February 1853 with 80 passengers. . . . . then from the The South Australian Register, Saturday May 21st 1853, the following, Messrs Bogild and Arndt in the cabin.
Dockenhuden :
owned by J. C. Godeffroy ; built in 1848. registered at Hamburg. Lost on 7th - 8th August 1853, on voyage from Melbourne (July 24th) to Batavia (Jakarta) in ballast and a crew of 14, owing to stong currents was unable to tack when breakers were seen ; off Cato Reef, Coral Sea ; she missed stays and drifted onto the rocks and became a total wreck. The crew spent more than two weeks repairing the three ships' boats before leaving (23rd August) for Moreton Bay, which was reached on 27th August, where they sold the boats and arrived at Sydney on the 6th September aboard the steamer City of Melbourne. Captain Meyer attributed the loss of the vessel to an error in the chronometer.

note.— There are very few surviving original lists of German passengers, so the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources, such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources, input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me using the link above. Regards Robert, Adelaide
