The barque Helene, from Hamburg, has made
a very fair passage, having on board a full complement of
passengers (who are
for the most part Prussians) and a cargo of general merchandise.
Captain Hansen reports that on the 6th December, In lat.
29° 18' S., long. 27° 17' W, he spoke the ship Geelong,
bound from Liverpool to Sydney, 53 days out.
The passengers
of
the Helene speak in highly complimentary
terms of Captain Hansen's conduct throughout the voyage, which
happily
terminated
without any mortality decreasing the number embarked at Hamburg,
although twins born on the passage died shortly before arrival.
The pilot in charge immediately on there being sufficient
water sailed over the bar, but the southerly wind precluded
the possibility of her reaching the Port until it shifted,
and it is most probable that by the assistance of the steam-tug
she will proceed into the harbour this morning. |
An index from the State Library South
Australia (SLSA) shows that 102 German migrants should have been
on the barque Helene for Port Adelaide, I have been
able to find 103 as listed below — Regards
Robert.
note.— There are very
few surviving original lists of German passengers, so
the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources,
such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources,
input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry
Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with
additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me
using the link above. Regards
Robert, Adelaide
