ship Lady Macdonald, (Lady McDonald) 567 tons (680 tons, new measurement), Captain Henry Biles, from Plymouth 15th December 1854, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 7th April 1855

South Australian Register Monday 9th April 1855
Saturday, April 7th :- the ship Lady M'Donald, 587 tons, H. Biles, Master, from Plymouth December 15th 1854.
Passengers: Mr. & Mrs Santo and seven children in the cabin and 283 Government Emigrants in the steerage.
9th ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1855 ; 5 births and 7 deaths on the passage ; John Black, surgeon-superintendent.

ship Lady Macdonald . . .

. . was built by Dunbar in 1847. She was grounded 1 mile NE of Algoa Bay, February 1876.

The ship Lady M'Donald, is owned by Mr. Dunbar of London. The log reports a somewhat rough passage out. On the 19th March there was a experienced a sad loss through the boiterous state of the weather; the ship being [—] in Lat.11' 29 S., 50"7' E., the barometer ranging at 28' 10' a very heavy sea struck her starboard quarter, to the davit of which was strung a lifeboat, one of the crew, a lascar, being near the boat at the time.
The immenese body of water came with such force as to carry away the boat from here lashing, and, together with here, the unfortunate lascar, who was not seen afterwards. Only one vessel has been mentioned to our reporter as having been spoken by the Lady Macdonald, namely, on the 11 January in Lat, 36' 39' N., long 18"30' W., the American barque Janet Bryan, from New Orleans, bound to Genoa, out 30 days.

South Australian Government Gazette 1855.
Arrived from Plymouth on the 7th of April with 282 immigrants. She was commanded by Mr Henry Biles, and Mr John Black was the surgeon-superintendent. Seven deaths and five births occurred during the voyage. The immigrants by this vessel were well selected and found ready employment. A great proportion were miners from Cornwall and agricultural laborers from the southern and western counties of England ; selected chiefly by Mr Wilcocks, the agent for the Commissioners. A few persons arrived by this ship aided by the funds of Highland and Island Society of Scotland and were selected by the Rev. Otto Trevelyan from among his own parishioners. All persons by this ship seem to have found ready employment, as all were finally disembarked several days before the lay days of the ship had expired.
