Return to SA Passenger Lists,1847-1886

(barque) Macedon, 338/429 tons, Captain Taylor, from London / Plymouth 15th September 1852, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 9th January 1853

South Australian Register Tuesday 11 January 1853

January 9th, 1853:-The Macedon: Passengers; Master Evans, Mr. William and Mrs. Ann (Wiodman) Reylin and child in the cabin, and Mr. and Mrs. Whitebread and child in the intermediate ; and 212 Government Emigrants in the steerage.—1st ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1853 ; nine births and seventeen deaths of the passage ; Samuel J. Thomas, surgeon-superintendent.

South Australian Register Thursday 13 January 1853: List of the Emigrants by the Macedon.....Among the emigrants 8 adults and 8 children died during the passage; and 1 child namely the son of Mr.Reylin, cabin passenger. Eight (8) births have also occurred since leaving England namely, 5 males and 3 females among the emigrants; and one male child, a son of Mrs.Reylin, one of the cabin passengers. Charles, born at sea 15th Dec. 1852

Sydney Shipping Gazette: There has been much fever, some diarrhoea and dysentery among the passengers of the Macedon; and the result has been 16 deaths, 8 of which were adults:—South Australian Register Jan. 7th.

extract from The South Australian Government Gazette April 14, 1853:

In the .Macedon sixteen deaths  occurred, of which ten were caused by fever
During the voyage, fever, dysentery, and Diarrhoea prevailed till the ship got into higher latitudes.

The Surgeon attributed the sickness partly to the ship having been becalmed for three weeks near the line, and also to an offensive smell in the ship, supposed to have been caused by exhalations produced from a part of a cargo of sugar, which had been washed into the hold on a previous voyage during a hurricane.
The ship was clean and well ventilated; the Surgeon-Superintendent acted most efficiently; and the Captain did everything in his power to support the Surgeon in carrying out his duty.
The emigrants spoke in warm terms of the unwearied attention and kindness both of the Surgeon and the Captain. In examining the ship,
I found that the boards of the bottom berths were, in some parts of the ship, so constructed that they could not be raised to allow the dirt to be removed which accumulated underneath;
I noticed it particularly in the single mens  apartment. It may possibly have escaped the notice of the emigration officers in England, as the greater part of the under berths were properly arranged with moveable boards.

Notes from the Surgeon’s report:
The provisions were good and abundant, the water …was sufficient in quantity but some casks leaked and as a measure of precaution a diminution of one pint a day for every statute adult was made for 19 days from 8th to 27th December… [The health of immigrants was] very indifferent from the commencement of the voyage till within the last few weeks.’
