Return to SA Passenger Lists,1847-1886

ship Nabob, 841 tons, Captain Morris, from Liverpool 1st September 1856, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 23rd December 1856

17th ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1856 ; 4 births and 6 deaths on the passage ; Charles Kitching, senior, surgeon-superintendent.
The Nabob arrived on the 23rd December, with 325 immigrants, after a passage from Liverpool of 115 days. Four births and six deaths were the casualties at sea.
This ship arrived in clean and excellent order, but the main deck is encumbered with round houses to such an extent that it seriously interferes with the space necessary for the exercise of the married and single men, and on this account only is ill-adapted for an emigrant ship, though there was abundant space on the poop for the exercise of the married and single women.
The immigrants expressed themselves in the warmest terms of the kindness which they had received at the hands of the surgeon-superintendent and the officers of the ship, as distinguished from the master, against whom many grievous complaints were made for coarse and abusive language used by him to the married and single men.
The Immigration Board sat to investigate these complaints, when it was clearly proved by evidence, as well as by admission of the master, that language of a very improper character had been used to the male emigrants.
It was, however, stated by the master in exculpation, that he had much difficulty in keeping the men from mixing with the sailors on the forcastle, some of the men giving facilities to the sailors to go below amongst the immigrants, which is strctly prohibited.
The surgeon-superintendent, while he strongly condemned the coarse and abusive language often used by the master, stated there were a few of the men who did all they could to annoy him. The surgeon stated that the master of the ship succeeded better in keeping the sailors separated from the emigrants than in any previous voyage which he had made as surgeon of an emigrant ship.
As Mr. Charles Kitching has acted in that capacity in five voyages, in all of which he has given perfect satisfaction, his opinion on such a subject is deserving of weight.
In all other respects the material comforts of the people seem to have been well cared for by the master.
One hundred and six persons came out in this ship as nominated emigrants under the nominee and remittance regulations.
