Return to German Emigrants to South Australia

ship Ocean (aka Wolga), 360 tons, Captain W. Fokkes, from Hamburg 26th April 1849, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 14th September 1849

The South Australian Register Saturday September 15th 1849

Friday September 14th.— The Ship Ocean (aka Wolga) 360 Tons, Fokkes, Master, from Hamburg 26th April. Passengers …… Evaded the Danish blockade of Hanseatic ports by pretending to be the Russian ship Wolga. Upon her Arrival in South Australia at least one newspaper reported the ship as being the Wolga, creating some confusion for historians.

The ship Ocean was built by the shipwright Beenck at Reiherstieg, Hamburg, in 1837-38 for the Hamburg firm of S.& B. Roosen.

The Ocean, W. Fokkes, master, arrived at Adelaide 14th September 1849, from Hamburg 26th April ; she had avoided the Danish blockade of the Elbe by assuming Russian colors and the name Wolga ; cleared 10th October 1849 for Valparaiso.
