| Miscellaneous Shipping |
The barque Peter Godeffroy, from Hamburg, via the
Cape of Good Hope, hove in sight shortly after meridian, on
Sunday
the 8th instant, but having a light breeze did not reach the
anchorage until late in the evening.
She reports a long passage from Hamburg to Cape Town, but
has made her voyage from thence in 39 days, bringing us one
month's later
news than that we were in possession of, and many English
as also upwards of 80 German passengers. Some of the former
are portion of the shipwrecked from the emigrant ship John
and Lucy, of 1,200 tons, O'Donnell, master, which
vessel sailed from Plymouth, bound to Table Bay, with 402
emigrants under
the medical care of Dr. R. T. Wyld, (one of our old colonists,
and formerly of Walkerville, who has just
returned by the Peter Godeffroy).
All appears to have gone on well until reaching the South
American coast, when the noble ship struck on a sunken reef
not laid down in the Admiralty chart,
situated 12 miles from Cape St. Rogue, and 185 miles north
of Pernambuco. Shortly after the
disaster the natives put off in their barcasas and jungadas,
and by these frail crafts landed all (no loss) in safety.
The boats belonging to the ship being useless amongst the
rocks, were not used. After Dr. Wyld
had landed he wrote to the English Consul, but the distance
being great, it occupied two months ere
they were all again put on board steamers. During
this lapse of time the emigrants lived
under tarpaulins at a place called Garcas, but all finally
reached Simon's Bay — some by the barque Ceres,
and others by the steamer Stanley, under
the care of Dr. Wyld. who, with his lady, reached Cape Town
at
the end of
January,
after witnessing the miraculous escape of nearly 500 souls
from drowning.
During the period the Peter Godeffroy was
lying at Simon's Bay, we are informed by Captain Johasen
[sic] that the well-known
ship Orient had arrived. She put in on
the 12th, and sailed after being in harbour five days. All
the passengers were
well, and the names of Mr. Bickford and Mr. Fox are mentioned
as amongst those recollected by the captain. Captain Johason
[sic] informs us that the French fleet, consisting of ten
war steamers, and having ten thousand troops on board, en
route for China, had called at Cape Town, and again taken their
departure, the last being on February 25. |
An index from the State Library South
Australia (SLSA) shows that 78 German migrants should have been
on the barque Peter Godeffroy for Port Adelaide, I
have been able to find 78 as listed below — Regards
Robert.
note.— There are very
few surviving original lists of German passengers, so
the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources,
such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources,
input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry
Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with
additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me

Robert, Adelaide
