Return to German Emigrants to South Australia

ship President Smidt, 450 tons, Captain H. Hitcken, from Bremen [?] 1848, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 8th April 1848 — Emil Reuner, Surgeon-superintendent

The South Australian Register Wednesday April 12 1848

Monday April 8, the Ship President Smidt, 450 tons, H. Hitcken, Master, from Bremen.
Passengers.— Mr. F.W. Jansen (Supercargo) and lady, Mrs. E. Jansen and Dr. Emil Reuner (Ships Surgeon) in the cabin.

This ship (the second passenger ship from Germany within a fortnight) arrived in our harbour yesterday, bringing 83 passengers, whose names, professions, and callings, will be found in our list of shipping arrivals. There were two deaths and two births during the passage. We are glad to notice amongst these new comers a goodly number of handicraftsman, because we apprehend, judging from past arrivals, that German gentlemen, without capital, are even less likely than English gentlemen similarly disqualified, to succeed here, fortuitously; and we need scarcely say that mere accomplishment will do little to serve their owners in a country where scholastic and counting-house qualifications are yet in limited demand, and of course very insufficiently requited. Our motive in making these observations surely cannot be misunderstood ; and is they are not, we hope they will be translated in Germany (for the German press here, after a series of very eccentric efforts to establish itself, is defunct).

note.— There are very few surviving original lists of German passengers, so the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources, such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources, input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me using the link above. Regards Robert, Adelaide
