Miscellaneous Shipping

The Queen Bee was seen on Friday afternoon far away to the westward of the stations steering a course towards the Long Spit. She was followed by one of the pilot cutters, but was first boarded by the boats from the beach, when a pilot took charge and stood to the eastward for the anchorage, where she came to shortly after dusk. The vessel to the same which last year sailed from Port Adelaide, with horses for India, but the Command has been changed to Captain Goodwin who reported leaving Plymouth on November 29, and for 17 days after beat about the Channel with a continuance of very violent gales, during which she made but 300 miles of the distance. She was afterwards becalmed for 12 days, and to those untoward circumstances may be attributed the length of the voyage.
Arrival of the Queer Bee with Immigrants.— Persons who have been anticipating this vessel as the means of filling vacancies from her passengers in domestic or farm occupations will be disappointed ; for the greater portion are consigned to friends, and though there are 33 single females, scarcely a dozen domestic servants are available from them. The midship section is well occupied by families, there being 61 married males, 62 married females, and 87 children located In this compartment—a perfect colony of strong vigorous looking people equal to the work incidental to a new start in life. There are few single men, of whom the majority are miners. Intended to develop the wealthy regions of Wallaroo. It is singular that such a lot of men should object to ship discipline, but it was so, however ; for when sea sickness was over a general disinclination to the daily routine of scrubbing and cleaning manifested itself, and called forth the capabilities of Dr. Ireland, who immediately instituted such a coarse of punishment in short diet that the malcontents set to with a will and continued to the end of the voyage most exemplary in their conduct. The industrial list shows a striking difference to previous vessels, there being 62 miners, 46 labourers, and a few mechanics, represented by 3 carpenters, 4 smiths.1engine-man, l cooper, 2 masons, l plumber, and l shoemaker, consequently the skilled artisans constitute the minority.
In the selection of families there seems to have been good judgment displayed, for there are about a dozen consisting of six members and still more numbering five. The age of the adults seems to range between 20 and 40, and altogether they appear a desirable batch of colonists. Dr. Ireland was not favoured with Normandy's distiller, of which he intimated his appreciation, but an inferior engine was supplied the vessel, and its performances were not at all satisfactory. From the Superintendent journals it appears there were seven deaths, and two births on the passage, the former resulting in most cases from dysentery. With regard to the general appearance of the vessel, it was extremely satisfactory, being clean and well regulated, especially In the married people's division. On Saturday night the steamer Royal Shepherd laid alongside, and received onboard 198 Immigrants for Wallaroo, for which port she immediately sailed.
