Return to German Emigrants to South Australia

brig Reiherstieg, 250 tons, Captain Jacob Hamann, from Hamburg 22nd June 1854, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 26th October 1854

The South Australian Register, Friday October 27th 1854:—
Arrival: Thursday October 26th, the brig Reiherstieg, 250 tons, J. Hamann, Master from Hamburg the 22nd. June 1854.
Passengers:— Messrs, Shutte, Friebig, Haydter, Howel, Heyde, Von der Heyde, Toyley in the cabin. and the following Prussian emigrants.... and this ... The Hamburg brig, Reiherstieg, from Hamburg, arrived at the lightship anchorage yesterday, being 127 days from the date of departure. No illness has occured during the voyage. She brings 7 cabin passengers and 143 Prussian Emigrants. No cargo. It is the intention of the master to disembark his passengers without leaving the lightship Anchorage.
from the Adelaide Times Friday October 27th 1854 the following under miscellaneous shipping..... there had been ten cases of Rheumatic Fever and two sudden deaths on board the Reiherstieg ; the one a case epilepsy (a man who was found dead in his bed by the Surgeon and the other was that of a woman during her accouchement).
An index from the State Library South Australia (SLSA) shows that 138 Prussian emigrants should have been on the brig Reiherstieg, I have been able to find 159 as listed below.— Regards Robert.

note.— There are very few surviving original lists of German passengers, so the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources, such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources, input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me using the link above. Regards Robert, Adelaide
