ship Schah Jehan, 757 tons, Captain James A. Cox, from Plymouth 24th August 1860, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 1st December 1860

. . . . — 3rd ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1860 ; —6— births and —2— deaths on the passage ; William Rutter, surgeon-superintendent.
The South Australian Advertiser, Monday 3 December 1860 p. 3

THE EMIGRANT SHIP SCHAH JEHAN.

This vessel, the last one chartered for the conveyance of emigrants from Plymouth to Adelaide, made her appearance at an early hour on Saturday morning, the 1st instant. She sailed from Plymouth on the 24th August, having previously embarked 318 souls. Nothing has transpired during the voyage of any particular importance. From the time of sailing from Plymouth down to her arrival, only one vessel was spoken, -October 16, in latitude 31 ° 9' S., I longitude 14° 49' E., the British ship Lady MacDonnell [Lady Macdonald], from London, bound to Sydney.

On the Schah Jehan nearing Kangaroo Island much easterly weather was encountered, delaying her several days within 200 miles of the port of destination. The cargo consists entirely of railway iron, consigned to the Madras Railway Company, to which port she proceeds as soon as she has landed the emigrants at Port Adelaide. A rather singular occurrence happened on her arrival.
It appears that during the voyage there was a single case of typhus fever. The patient, a female emigrant, was placed in hospital, and the Surgeon-Superintendent, Mr. Rutter, who has now completed his ninth voyage with a similar charge, being of opinion that sympathy too frequently aided disease, resolved that no person on board should be acquainted that so direful a contagion existed. The patient became convalescent about 18 days before the arrival of the vessel at the Lightship. The Assistant Health-Officer, previous to boarding, on putting the usual questions to the Surgeon, was informed that typhus fever had existed. No sooner had this intelligence passed the lips of the medical officer, than the greatest possible excitement prevailed on board ; even the captain would not believe it, and insisted that the surgeon was mistaken. However, after some explanation, the cause of Dr. Rutter's silence was understood to be his anxiety to keep the emigrants' minds from being intimidated. The ship was consequently ordered to the North Arm to await inspection. During the voyage two deaths occurred amongst the infants.

The emigrants are reported to be of a very superior class, and from their appearance there is no doubt this report is verified, although when the vessel was boarded the heavy weather prevailing was greatly to the disadvantage of appearance and cleanliness in tho vessel. An excellent apparatus for distilling sea-water has greatly added to their comfort, being capable of converting 400 gallons per diem.

From the industrial list the return gives :- Laborers, 41 ; female servants, including dairymaids, housemaids, cooks, &c., 32 ; shoemakers, 3 ; dressmaker, 1 ; mechanic, 1 ; baker, 1 ; governesses, 3 ; miners, l8 ; tailors, 2 ; ploughmen, 4 ; constables, 2 ; copper- smith, 1 ; shepherds, 2 ; groom, 1 ; coachman, 1.
The national classification is .. English adults, 131 ; children from 1 to 12 years, 51 ; infants, 7 ; total English, 189. Scotch adults, 92 ; children from 1 to 12 years, 28 ; infant, 1. Total Scotch, 121. Irish adults, 5 ; children from 1 to 12 years, 12 ; total, 17. Grand total, 318, being equal to 2681/2 statute adults. Of these there are 38 married couples ; single men, 73 ; single women, 79 ; children between 1 and 12 years of age, male, 38 ; female, 43 ; infants, .males, 5 ; females, 4.

The surgeon, Mr. Rutter, was last in this port when in charge of emigrants by the Europa about four years since. Since writing the above, intelligence has arrived that the above named vessel is ashore high and dry on Pelican Point, near the Fourth Beacon, Port side, going out the channel. She was, at the time of her grounding, in charge of a pilot, but to whom, we understand, not the slightest blame attaches. The vessel had been fast to the mooring, and the Young Australian was proceeding to swing her to take her in tow, when the wind, blowing a gale, caught her on the quarter, causing her to take the ground. She will have to discharge 150 tons cargo before she is expected to float.

In the Reports by the Emigration Officer, Dr. Duncan, there was often mention made in regard to Nominee's or General Emigrants ; the list below made a special effort to separate those into two lists, so, I have combined these but made notations alongside the family name, thus, General Emigrants = GE and Nominee = N. — Robert
