MISCELLANEOUS SHIPPING.
The Sophie. -This barque made
her appearance in Gulf St. Vincent yesterday morning, the
21st
instant after a passage of 108 days, from Hamburg, having
on board a valuable cargo, has also 95 passengers. This vessel
is the same that arrived in Port Adelaide eight years since,
and is commanded by the same Captain, who reports having experienced
a very boisterous run from the longitude of the Cape of Good
Hope, to sighting Kangaroo Island. The winds encountered were
from S.W. to W.S.W., and compelled him to keep his vessel
under close sail. Spoke no vessels. The passengers are chiefly
from Prussia:— From Hanover, 8 ; Holstein, 3 ; Lauenberg,
2 ; Mecklenberg, 5 ; Prussia, 76. Amongst them are a great
number
of agricultural labourers, miners, and mechanics. *
// The
official list announces that the following embarked at Hamburg:— Male
adults, 56 ; female adults, 41 ; children between eight and
twelve years of age, 67 ; children under eight years of age,
25 ; and infants, 3 ; giving a grand total embarking of 196.
// During the voyage one birth
transpired, as also two deaths -one an infant, the other an
elderly female, who had been
ailing from pulmonary disease. No other illness occurred during
the voyage. The passengers appear healthy and cheerful. The
draught of water being only 12 feet, the pilot Mr. Creer,
at once proceeded over the Bar into harbour.
* // this section published
in the newspaper is obviously in error ; the original embarkation
list at Hamburg indicates 95 steerage passengers, plus 2
cabin passengers (add one birth, subtract two deaths)
= 96 total // |

The South Australian Register, Friday 22 October
1858 |
The Hamburg barque Sophie has on board
a rather varied and extensive cargo of general merchandise
and
European manufactures, together with a full complement
of, passengers, who are for the most part Prussians, and if
a judgment can be formed from
appearances, they would seem to be well adapted to colonization,
being generally healthy and cleanly. [sic] The vessel has
made rather a long passage, the weather prior to reaching
the parallel of the Cape of Good Hope being unfavourable ;
but since that time strong breezes from the west and north-west
have predominated. The passengers have enjoyed good health
on the passage, there having been only two cases of mortality — one
an adult female from consumption, and the second an infant
which only lived a few hours after its birth. At usual with
passenger vessels her draught of water is light, and as soon
as the 12- feet signal was made the pilot in charge squared
away for the bar. |
An index from the State Library South
Australia (SLSA) shows that 97 German migrants should have been
on the Sophie, I have been able
to find 98 as listed below — Regards
Robert.
note.— There are very
few surviving original lists of German passengers, so
the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources,
such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources,
input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry
Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with
additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me
using the link above. Regards
Robert, Adelaide
