The Fleets

Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij, Amsterdam / Royal Netherlands Steamship Co.

Founded in 1856 and for the first twenty years operated to the Baltic and Mediterranean although two voyages to New York were made in 1869 by the POLLUX and VESUVIUS and occasional later voyages on this route. Regular Amsterdam - New York passenger sailings commenced in 1881 but agreement with Holland America Line caused them to withdraw from North Atlantic sailings in 1883. In 1912 KNSM took over Koninklijke West-Indische Maildienst / Royal West Indian Mail Service (KWIM), but operated the company seperately until 1927 when KWIM was liquidated. KNSM concentrated on passenger and cargo services between NW Europe, West Indies, Central America, North and West Coasts of South America. In 1981 KNSM became part of the Nedlloyd Group.
