The Fleets
Nippon Yusen Kaisha K.K.
One of the largest shipping lines in the world, NYK was
formed in 1885 by the merger of Mitsubishi Shokai with Kyodo Unyu Kaisha.
The company expanded rapidly, initially in the Far East and in 1899 inaugurated
a liner service between Japan and London. Later services were expanded
to South America, Batavia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and western
USA and Canada. World War II saw the destruction of much of the NYK fleet
and the confiscation of most of the remainder during 1945-46 but by the
mid 1950s NYK ships were again trading around the world. The advent of
popular air travel caused the company to dispose of their passenger ships
in the 1960s and to commence establishing container ship routes in 1968.
In 1989 NYK revived it's passenger ship business with cruise ships and
formed the subsidiary Crystal Cruises to handle this operation. The company
is still operating.
Many thanks to Ted Finch for his assistance in collecting this data.
