Loyalist Ships
The Argo Transport,
from St. Augustine, Florida destined to Chedabucto,
Guysborough County, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia July 13th 1784.
This list comprises only seventy-three persons of the
estimated two hundred and sixty, both black and white, who arrived
aboard the Argo. These people had originally fled
from the Carolinas or Georgia and were or had been Loyalists, but were
now
Refugees.
They
were from the Duke of Cumberland's Regiment and were referred to as
the "St.
Augustine Loyalists" and
arrived at Halifax in an impoverished and distressed state. They are
thought to have arrived at Halifax on July 29th 1784, however this
list showing the grants of land in Guysborough County, is dated July
15th 1784.
