The Fleets
National Greek Line / Byron S.S.
Co.
Founded in 1908 by Embiricos Bros to operate passenger services between Greek
ports and New York. A British flagged subsidiary company was set up in
1915 and named Byron Steamship Co. In 1921 U.S.Immigration Laws restricted
the number of Greek immigrants resulting in a large decrease in the number
of 3rd class passengers and in 1923 the company extended their sailings
to Constantinople, Beirut and Alexandria and also commenced calls at Boston.
Further immigration restrictions and the world slump caused further decline
in business and the company made their last voyage in 1935 and later went
into liquidation.
